    Querencia is a resort-style retirement community for older adults in the Barton Creek neighborhood of Austin. It’s a residential retirement option that encourages health and wellness through an active, independent lifestyle. Querencia provides services, social activities and special amenities to enhance the lifestyle you're already enjoying. Every independent living resident is guaranteed lifetime access to on-site assisted living, memory support, and long-term skilled nursing at The Plaza, should they ever need it.

  • What is Life Care?

    Life Care is an all-inclusive retirement lifestyle choice that combines the benefits and amenities of independent living with access to on-site hearth care services. Querencia’s program entitles residents to a lifetime use of their residence and guaranteed lifetime access to assisted living, memory support or skilled nursing, should the need arise.

  • What if I can’t qualify for Life Care?

    People who come to Querencia at Barton Creek with an immediate need for health care services receive the same superb health care at The Plaza, although they don’t qualify for full benefits of Life Care. Instead, we offer direct admission for a monthly service fee.

  • As a Life Care resident, what if I run out of money?

    As part of our commitment to our Life Care residents, we’ve created a Financial Hardship Protection Plan. If you outlive your resources for reasons beyond your control and can't pay your monthly fee, you will never be asked to leave the community. You can stay here and keep your guaranteed priority access to our on-site health care. See your Life Care agreement for details.

  • Do I have to pay an entrance fee to move into The Plaza?

    No, you do not have to pay an entrance fee to move directly into The Plaza at Querencia’s Assisted Living, Memory Support or Nursing. There is a minimal, one-time, non-refundable community fee. The Plaza is a certified provider of Medicare services. Our skilled nursing and rehabilitation accepts outside admissions for a rehabilitation stay under your Medicare benefits.

  • What does it mean to be a nonprofit community?

    While for-profit communities use their income to pay dividends to investors, as a nonprofit entity, Querencia at Barton Creek reinvests revenue after expenses into the community, where it belongs, to benefit the residents. This difference is at the heart of Senior Quality Lifestyles Corporation’s (SQLC) mission and vision. Our nonprofit status means that Querencia must meet stringent financial guidelines, including strict government regulations. Therefore, residents have peace of mind, knowing that nonprofit financial controls and reduced operating costs translate into lower, stabilized monthly fees and favorable tax credits and exemptions. Research also indicates that nonprofit communities invest more resources into health services than for-profit communities.

  • What is an entrance fee and what does it mean to me?

    The entrance fee is a one-time fee based on the size of your residence and is 90% refundable to you or to your estate. The entrance fee is not a real estate transaction, or a transfer of deed, it is more like insurance. It guarantees that you will have life time care at a predetermined cost. It gives you the right to occupy our residence for the rest of your life, or to have access to assisted living, nursing or memory care, if or when needed. Your entrance fee also ensures that you won’t be asked to leave in the event of financial hardship for reasons outside of your control.

  • Why do I pay a monthly fee and what does it include?

    The monthly fee is a comprehensive charge that varies with the size of your residence, number of occupants, and level of care. It covers a flexible meal plan, all utilities except your personal telephone and internet connection, weekly housekeeping including the laundering (& ironing) of bed linens, security and courtesy services, interior and exterior maintenance, transportation, social and recreational programs, property taxes and insurance, wellness programming and an additional storage area outside of your apartment.

  • What if my health changes while I’m living at Querencia?

    Querencia’s Life Care program guarantees unlimited access to long-term assisted living, memory support or skilled nursing care. At the time of a permanent transfer to The Plaza, the Capote monthly service fee is applied to all Life Care residents. Only a resident of a Life Care community can enjoy this kind of security knowing that they are protected from the rising costs of long-term care.

  • What if I am married and my spouse has a health challenge? Can I remain in my apartment to be nearby?

    Yes. If your spouse needs to move to assisted living or skilled nursing care, you may remain in your apartment. In other words, one of you live at the Plaza at Querencia and one of you can remain nearby in your independent living apartment.

  • Can I have home health care in my apartment?

    The Plaza at Querencia (our health services center) contains 40 Assisted Living apartments, 23 Assisted Living Memory Support suites, and 40 Nursing suites. The Plaza is specifically designed for those residents needing assistance. In addition to hospitality staff, our carefully trained medical staff is there to support Plaza residents with activities of daily living. Rehab therapy (physical, speech and occupational) is also located in The Plaza and available to all residents of Querencia. However, for a limited time period (no more than 8 hour per day), certain health situations may allow for temporary care in your independent living apartment through home health care.

  • Can I have overnight guests in my apartment?

    Of course. Your home is your own, and you can invite friends and family members to stay overnight. For a fee, there is also a guest suite available to residents should you need more room or more privacy to accommodate your guests.

  • How do I reserve a residence at Querencia and what happens if I change my mind?

    To reserve your apartment at Querencia, you will be asked to place a deposit for the apartment you select. This deposit will be placed in an escrow account Querencia has established for this purpose. If you need to cancel your reservation, your deposit will be returned less a $500 administrative processing fee.

  • Once I select an apartment, can I change my mind and choose a different one?

    Yes. Subject to availability, you can change your residence prior to or after moving to Querencia. The fees will be adjusted according to the size and location of the apartment you choose.

  • Do I need to change my doctors or health insurance if I become a resident of Querencia?

    No. You may continue to see the doctors of your choice and will be required to maintain your Medicare and supplemental insurance.

  • I have long-term care insurance. Will it help me at Querencia?

    Long-term care insurance is a great financial tool but does not address availability to quality care. As a Querencia Life Care resident you have priority access to all levels of care in the community at deep discounts. A number of Querencia residents have utilized their long-term care insurance policies in The Plaza Health Services neighborhood of our community. Our billing team can even serve as a liaison for paperwork with the insurance company.

  • Will my monthly fee increase over time?

    For your budgeting purposes, we advise residents that the monthly fee will increase as the cost of living increases, and residents will receive 60 days’ notice of any changes. On average, this increase is usually in the 4% range. The advantage of living in a non-profit Life Care community is the fact that Querencia is guided by a mission-driven board of directors whose goal is for expenses to equal revenue. Querencia does not have to meet the requirements of for-profit communities.

  • How and when is it decided that I can no longer live in my independent living apartment and need health care in the Plaza?

    A permanent transfer to health care will only take place after extensive consultation with you, your physician, family, and Querencia’s Medical Director. If this consultation determines that you no longer are able to safely live independently, you will be transferred to the appropriate level of care at the Plaza.

  • What if I need skilled nursing care and there are no beds available in the Plaza?

    Querencia’s policy is to hold a certain number of beds open for residents in independent living but in the unlikely event a bed is not available, Querencia will arrange and pay for your care in your residence by a Certified Home Health Agency or Licensed Home Care Services Agency, or another facility of Querencia’s choice, until a bed becomes available in nursing at Querencia.

  • Will I need to have property insurance?

    As a resident of Querencia, you will simply need to insure your personal property.

  • Will I have a voice as a resident of Querencia?

    Querencia has a very active, elected Residents’ Council which meets with representatives of management at least 4 times a year to discuss such issues as policies, programs and services. There are also several committees which focus on issues such as landscaping, library, welcoming of newcomers, wellness, pets, etc. Our Executive Director hosts a town hall meeting for all residents each month to include up-to-date topics of concern and interest with a question and answer session.

  • If I am absent from the community for an extended time, do I receive a credit for missed meals?

    Yes. If you give notice with the concierge, and you are gone for more than 14 consecutive days, you will receive a meal credit allowance.

  • What is required to apply for Life Care at Querencia?

    Querencia requires that you have assets and income sufficient to meet living expenses, and that you be capable of living independently (without needing assistance with the activities of daily living such as dressing, bathing and medication management). Residents in Independent Living enjoy the services of a hospitality staff including concierge, valet, fitness instructor, maintenance, dining, security and housekeeping. Potential residents will be asked to complete a Financial Statement and submit a Medical evaluation with authorization for us to contact the primary care physician.

  • Do I have to pay for transportation and parking?

    No, this is covered by your monthly service fee.
